JOYEETA SANYAL
Virtuoso Sitarist - Hindustani Tradition
Rigorous training in the pure Hindustani tradition
From a very young age, Joyeeta Sanyal was initiated into the sitar by renowned masters. She studied particularly with Deepak Choudhury and Kushal Das. She continued her apprenticeship at the Gayakee Gharana with Kumar Roy. At the same time, she benefited from the teachings of illustrious figures such as Pandit Ajoy Chakrabarty and Pandit Partha Chatterjee.
A graduate of the Centre for Cultural Resources and Training (CCRT) in New Delhi, between 2005 and 2012 she joined the ITC SRA Academy (Indian Classical Music Academy) as an academician. It was there that she began in-depth training with Guru Manilal Nag.
This demanding education enabled her to develop a style that is at once technical, expressive and captivating.
The website cricao.org notes: "she draws from her instrument a magical fusion of sounds of bewitching depth combined with notes of exceptional height." The Journal of Music even describes her as "one of the best young female sitarists in the world today."
An artistic alchemy with her brother, tabla master Debajyoti Sanyal
Joyeeta forms a remarkable duo with her older brother, Debajyoti Sanyal. Their musical connection, forged since childhood, is often praised by critics. The website diwanenlorraine.net evokes "a profound connection" allowing Joyeeta to blend in her performances "ardor and subtlety, sensitivity and energy."
Together, they perform regularly internationally. In Ireland particularly, The Journal of Music covered several concerts in 2014. These performances at the Bray Jazz Festival and at the Chester Beatty Library in Dublin paid a vibrant tribute to Ravi Shankar.
An international career acclaimed by audiences and critics
Over the years, Joyeeta Sanyal has established herself on international stages. She performs both in concert and on television. Her 2014 Irish tour (Dublin, Bray, Galway) with Debajyoti was widely covered by the music press. In 2017, an excerpt from her concert in Varengeville-sur-Mer with tabla player Mosin Kawa Khan was shared on SoundCloud by LP36. This recording reveals her ability to transport listeners into the rich universe of Hindustani music. More recently, in 2022, she shared the stage with Prabhu Edouard in Colombes. This North Indian traditional music concert was featured in an excerpt broadcast on Facebook by Prabhu Edouard Music. The video captures the full poetic and captivating essence of her playing. She continues her prestigious collaborations with artists such as Balakumar Paramalingam, Udupa Giridar, Labonee Mohanta.
An openness to traditional arts and Indian dance
Joyeeta also collaborates with artists from other disciplines, particularly traditional Indian dance. The website eterritoire.fr reports her participation in an exceptional event alongside kathak dancer Maitryee Mahatma, and more recently with the prestigious dancer Labonee Mohanta.
